ELENI KARAINDROU: DUST OF TIME
ECM New Series 2070 02894766766(7)
Sergiu Nastasa: violin; Renato Ripo: cello; Maria Bildea: harp; Vangelis Christopoulos: oboe; Spyros Kazianis: bassoon; Antonis Lagos: French horn; Dinos Hadjiiordanou: accordion; Eleni Karaindrou: piano; Natalia Michailidou: piano; Camerata, Friends of Music Orchestra; Hellenic Radio Television Orchestra; Alexandros Myrat: conductor
• Eleni Karaindrou’s music for Theo Angelopoulos’s new movie, “Dust of Time” starring Willem Dafoe, Irène Jacob and Michel Piccoli.
• CD issued to coincide with movie’s launch at Berlin Film Festival (February 5-15).
• Time Magazine called Eleni Karaindrou “Greece’s most eloquent living composer”. For Theo Angelopoulos she is “one of the best film musicians in the world”.
• Karaindrou and Angelopoulos have been creatively associated for 25 years. “Dust of Time” is the eighth Angelopoulos film to feature Eleni’s music.
• Often Karaindrou’s music plays a decisive role in shaping the emotional climate of the films she serves – and never more so than on “Dust of Time” where one of the film’s protagonists is a musician.
• Yet the strength of Karaindrou’s compositions is such that they stand very well by themselves, and each of her albums reveals an unmistakable autonomy. “Dust of Time” produced by Manfred Eicher in Athens, has a special, gentle and intimate character, with violin, harp, cello, oboe and accordion given central roles.
• Eleni Karaindrou’s ECM recordings – among them “Ulysses’ Gaze”, “Trojan Women” and “Eternity and a Day” - have been best-sellers, as well as critics’ favourites.
• In Greece, Karaindrou is a star of the first magnitude, where her concerts sell out immediately, and these days she is increasingly heard outside her homeland, too. Her music, for instance, was a highlight of the recent ECM Festival in Frankfurt.
• Release of CD follows live DVD “Elegy of the Uprooting” (issued in December 2008).
