JON BALKE & AMINA ALAOUI – SIWAN
ECM2042 602517801516

Amina Alaoui: vocal, Jon Hassell: trumpet, electronics, Kheir Eddine M Kachiche: violin, Jon Balke: keyboards, conductor, Helge Andreas Norbakken: percussion, Pedram Khavar Zamini: zarb

Barokksolistene
Bjarte Eike: violin, leader, Per Buhre: violin, Peter Spissky: violin, Anna Ivanovna Sundin: violin, Milos Valent: violin, Rastko Roknic: viola, Joel Sundin: viola, Tom Pitt: cello, Kate Hearne: cello, recorder, Mattias Frostensson: double-bass, Andreas Arend: theorboe, archlute, Hans Knut Sveen: harpsichord, clavichord

Magical music, trailing deep roots. The listener is at first struck by the power of Amina Alaoui’s voice, soaring above Jon Balke’s remarkable compositions for baroque ensemble - with soloists drawn from jazz, scattered improvisational traditions, and the world of early music. Behind this remarkable musical integration is a web of philosophical, historical, and literary interconnections, as Balke and Alaoui set texts from Sufi poets, Christian mystics, troubadours and more and - inspired by the tolerant and creative spirit of medieval Al-Andalus - ponder what was lost to the bonfires of the Inquisition. Setting new standards in transcultural music, Siwan shows what can be made today when artists of the most divergent background pool their energies.

MIROSLAV VITOUŠ GROUP – REMEMBERING WEATHER REPORT
ECM2073     602517881372

Miroslav Vitouš: double-bass, Franco Ambrosetti: trumpet, Gary Campbell: tenor saxophone, Gerald Cleaver: drums, Michel Portal: bass clarinet

Vitous was one of the founders of Weather Report and helped to shape its early (and revolutionary) mix of enigmatic, free-flowing compositions and high-level improvisational dialogues, in which all the instruments enjoyed parity. It is this formative period that Miroslav salutes with his all-acoustic band and some phenomenal playing. The obvious musical empathy between Vitous and drummer Gerald Cleaver is a joy, Ambrosetti and Campbell contribute inspired solos – as does guest Michel Portal, another iconic figure in the history of the music. Material, almost exclusively from Vitous’s pen, alludes to Wayne Shorter’s “Nefertiti” and to Ornette Coleman’s “Lonely Woman” – as well as to Miles Davis and Antonín Dvořák.

EVAN PARKER ELECTRO-ACOUSTIC ENSEMBLE – THE MOMENT´S ENERGY
ECM2066     602517747982

Evan Parker: soprano saxophone, Peter Evans: trumpet, piccolo trumpet, Ko Ishikawa: shō, Ned Rothenberg: clarinet, bass clarinet, shakuhachi, Philipp Wachsmann: violin, live electronics, Agustí Fernández: piano, prepared piano, Barry Guy: double-bass, Paul Lytton: percussion, live electronics, Lawrence Casserley: signal processing instrument, Joel Ryan: sample and signal processing, Walter Prati: computer processing, Richard Barrett: live electronics, Paul Obermayer: live electronics, Marco Vecchi: sound projection

The fifth ECM disc from Parker’s Electro-Acoustic Ensemble whose pioneering work has effectively established a model for a new kind of improvising chamber orchestra, creating fresh colours from the blending and contrasting of acoustic instruments and live electronics. The latest edition of the group adds some new members – two Americans, Ned Rothenberg and Peter Evans, both well-known to followers of improvised music, and a Japanese musician, Ko Ishikawa – and expands the horizons still further. With more acoustic instruments in the mix, the group now embraces both the ancient and the modern: Ko, for instance, plays exclusively the shō, the archaic bamboo mouth organ, which sounds thoroughly futuristic when processed by the Ensemble’s sonic scientists. Similarly, the borders between improvisation and composition are dissolved in this music: “The Moment’s Energy” features an extended new work commissioned by the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival.

ALFRED ZIMMERLIN: EURIDICE, CHAMBER MUSIC
ECM2045     028947632610

Carmina Quartett, Aequatuor, Aria Quartett

2. Streichquartett "mit kleinen Wellen an jedem Blattrand (wie eines Windes Lächeln)" (2003)
Euridice singt (2001-2003/04), Szene für Sopran, Oboe, Violoncello, Klavier und Zuspiel-CD
1. Streichquartett (2001/02)

Alfred Zimmerlin (born 1955) who won an early international reputation as an improvising cellist, has long been known in his native Switzerland as a prolific composer of strong sonic imagination, assured technique and resoureceful talent. His catalogue of more than 70 compositions includes solo pieces, music with live electronics alongside works for radio and film. The ECM debut album introduces him with three attractive works for small forces, all of them in performances both energetic and sensitive. “Euridice singt”, a 35-minute “Szene” for soprano, oboe, cello, piano and tape is based on a libretto by Swiss poet, rapper and free improviser Raphael Urweider. Not Orpheus himself is the central character in this intelligent rendering of the much-used operatic subject matter from Greek mythology but Euridice, whose death is disclosed here as the very catalyst for Orpheus’ artistic awakening. A most diverse array of musical elements makes for an unsettling listening. The interest in a formally elastic integration of heterogenous materials lies at the heart of Zimmerlin’s esthetic in which the concept of the “column of time” plays a central role – the awareness that many layers of the historical past are communicating with each other while providing the fundamentals for a genuinely “contemporary” music. In Zimmerlin’s strangely sensuous compositions there is space for expressive cantabile, the sound of prepared instruments, noises of musique concrète and even rap.
