Jan Keller – bassguitars, cello

Night Optics is an instrumental quintet composed of musicians whose starting point is partially jazz, partially classical music. The result is a sort of periphery or suburb of the jazz mainstream, a place lit with flashes of the resonance of the pulsing fevers of the metropolis, and breezes of the sombre surfaces of the forest pools. A neurotic’s meditation blends with the phlegmatic’s mad dash in a herbarium of half-forgotten animals.

The choir of St Vitus’s Cathedral was also regularly performed Italian music. That was not unusual, after all, since Italy set the tone practically throughout the eighteenth century. Italian music, or at least compositions in the Italian style, form part of almost all the Bohemian music archives of this period. What is remarkable, however, is the great number and particularly selection of compositions that have been preserved at St Vitus’s...

JOHANN SEBASTIAN BACH (1685 - 1750)
Orgel-Büchlein BWV 599-644 [Little Organ Book]
Jaroslav Tůma - organ
instrument was built by Vladimír Šlajch (Borovany 2004) for St Peter church at Bruchsal, Germany
"No one before Bach, and probably no one after him, ever achieved such refined compositional mastery of polyphonic work with theme and counter-theme, nor power of emotional effect using elements of Baroque tonal symbolism. The sighs of pain, the theme of the Cross, the fall of Adam, angels’ wings, tremendous joy, all these are attributes that Bach incorporated perfectly into music that flows logically, is harmonically rich, sounds natural, and is uplifting and spirited."

UPSIDE DOWN!
or Ba©chanalistica
What one earth do you mean, ”Bachanalistica”? No, don’t worry, this isn’t about some cheap vulgar approach to marketing the great Johann Sebastian (although he certainly had a great appetite for food!), or some trendy display of musicological expertise, or a hygienist’s analysis of the drinkability of water from the stream (der Bach = stream in German). Bacchanalia, in the sense of wild and opulent revels took their name from Bacchus, “the patron of feasting and drinking” – yes, when wine flowed in the streams! We might find a certain etymological association with another German word, der Bauch = the belly, which is related to our Czech word “bachor” meaning one of the stomachs of the cow. Bachanti or vaganti, was once the name given to people – mostly students – who wandered from university to university, from town to town and from inn to inn, begging, seducing, and enjoying their food and drink. From the Middle Ages the vagabond pupils and students were an element akin to the homeless of today. But...

- J.I.F.Vojta, the doctor of medicine was contemporary of the famous Heinrich Ignaz Franz von Biber. Apart from notes in the university records, written in his own hand, we have no other primary-source information about him. Vojta was the house physician of the Benedictines at the Church of St Nicholas in the Old Town, and he lived in the Tyn quarter, near Tomas Baltazar Janovka. In his day, he was a recognized composer with his own pupils. Just how prolific a composer Vojta was, we don’t know. We have knowledge only of 27 of his compositions, of which only seven survive – in Brno, Prague, Vienna, and Paris. All are recorded on this album.

- Stockhausen´s Tierkreis from 1975 is a cycle of twelve compositions inspired by the signs of the zodiac. The work is intended for one chordal instrument; playing from the written notes is largely open to interpretation. Ivan Zenaty offers a version in which each sign of the zodiac is performed by a different chordal instrument. The solo violin, by contrast, moves through all the signs, influenced both by the meaning of the individual signs and by the character of the instrument accompanying it at that moment.

This collection of twelve spiritual cantatas, called Opella ecclesiastica, was published in Augsburg in 1723. It is the only extant work of the Czech Baroque composer, who, owing to the mature form of these arias, is considered to have had a musical language comparable to that of composers as great as Bach and Haendel.

František Tůma, an excellent player of the viola da gamba and theorbo, belongs with his work to the music of the Late Baroque. The polyphony of his composition predominates, but there are also homophonic movements with simpler harmonies foreshadowing the Classical music that was to come. Among instrumental works are his trio and quartet sonatas, symphonies, and partitas, mostly for string instruments and continuo, some of which, however, were also played by orchestras.

ORGAN IMPROVISATION
JAROSLAV TŮMA
- Jaroslav Tůma (*1956) eight organ improvisations present a masterful and widely viewed confrontation of music cultural past and present. Already an idea on its own is a unigue challenge to so called classical music where an improvisation as a art linked to the nonmediate creative source has almost disappeared. Tuma´s creations, however, are heading further: there it is not only interpreted a brilliant technique that still luckily, in the long run, constantly belong to basic professional skill of every organist but also we can feel there a many hundred years of unique complex practice of a royal instrument.
Jaroslav Tůma - organ

Until historians of music finally elevated him to the status of the Bach of Bohemia, Černohorský had long been widely considered a composer for the organ. Thanks only to painstaking detective work did it become possible in subsequent years to determine the key moments of his life and, at least in part, to answer a question that to this day remains just as intriguing – namely, who exactly was

- The famous set of songs known as the TRUTZ-NACHTIGAL by the Jesuit Fridrich Spee von Langenfeld, completed in 1634, was to be reprinted many times in German. It was beautifully translated into Czech by the Jesuit FELIX KADLINSKY and published under the title of ZDORO-SLAVICEK, first in 1665. It contains 52 texts of songs to 25 melodies. Some melodies can fit different texts and vice versa, a practice we still sometimes follow today. The individual songs soon spread to “normal“ hymnbooks as well, where they survived at the least into the 19th century. Paradoxically, a music typically intimate in style, delicate, designed for private prayer and contemplation, became so popular that it found itself arranged in crowd chorales…
